Paul Gerben art stems from an accomplished creative career

For Paul Gerben art was a part of early childhood. He grew up in a family that included interior designers, artists and sculptors, and started painting himself at the tender age of seven. This diverse creative background undoubtedly helped to shape his unique style.
Gerben went on to study at New Yok Pratt Institute, Rhode Island School of Design and the University of the Arts in Philadelphia before pursuing a creative career.

“NYC has a raw energy & socialness I have never found anywhere else. Its so visually stimulating just to explore and walk the streets of the different neighbourhoods. Most of my art comes from the streets, textures, colours & the organic energy NYC gives off.” – Paul Gerben

Working as a photographer and creative director, he produced logos and branding campaigns for an impressive roster of clients including IBM, VH1, Ford & Elite Models and various other Fortune 500 companies. His photography has also been published in household name magazines including People, ELLE, In Style and E! Entertainment.

Gerben’s commercial work often featured popular icons from sports, fashion and politics, such as Bill Clinton, Bono, Salman Rushdie and Naomi Campbell. As a result of his expertise, he began to build a significant celebrity following both in and beyond the commercial world.

Working as a photographer and creative director on location and in the studio also likely helped to develop Gerben’s use of natural light and energetic approach to composition.

Raw energy is captured in Paul Gerben’s art

Following a successful twenty-year career in New York as a photographer and designer, Paul Gerben evolved his distinctive style. Fine art became a consuming passion, and today he is entirely focused on these works, leaving his numerous other projects behind. His work contains the abstract and surreal, filtered through a fine tuned creative eye.

For Paul Gerben art is an opportunity to capture the raw energy of individuals and the urban landscape. Surfaces eroded by elemental forces of wind, rain or fire and a fluid use of vivid colour sets his work apart from market contemporaries.

“I use everything I can find, from paint, pen and ink to photography & computers. Every piece is an experiment; I never have a concrete idea of how it will turn out. I just keep playing with the piece organically until it feels right and speaks to me.” – Paul Gerben
