Raphael Mazzucco is one of the world’s most influential fashion photographers and a talented contemporary artist. His work has been met with critical acclaim all around the world. Collectors include the likes of supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio and contemporary icon Damien Hirst.
We were delighted to launch his latest solo exhibition Empyrean in Maddox Gallery Los Angeles, our newest location and first permanent space in the US. Consisting of 60 incredible artworks, Empyrean truly captured the attention and imagination of visitors.
Once a model himself, Mazzucco spent years spent honing his skills as a fashion photographer in Italy, France and Amsterdam. On arriving in New York, his work won the attention of iconic designer brands including Victoria’s Secret, Guess Jeans, L’Oreal, Ralph Lauren and Bergdorf Goodman.
Mazzucco’s fashion editorials featured in French & Italian Vogue, Playboy, Vanity Fair and three Sports Illustrated Swimsuit editions. He has also been profiled in the Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker and The New York Times.

Outside of the fashion world, Mazzucco is world-renowned for his celebrity portraiture, particularly actors including Olivia Newton John, Adrien Brody, Susan Sarandon, Antonio Banderas, Paris Hilton, Matt Damon and Dakota Fanning. He even partnered with Jimmy Iovine of Interscope Records and rap producer Sean “Diddy” Combs to shoot a collection of celebrity portraiture.
“One of the top 50 photographers in the world to watch” – American Photo
Despite his incredible success in the fashion photography world, Mazzucco chose to swap his camera for canvas and pursue his passion for fine art.
“The most important idea to me is that photography should be just another way to express one’s vision; another creative channel” – Raphael Mazzucco.
Mazzucco still bases his work in photography, but utilises painting, drawing, collage and resin to overlay these images with marks, brushstrokes, collage and hand-lettered texts. His mixed media pieces merge a love for photography with a new sensuality, combining daring experimentation and a keen eye for detail to build a dynamic narrative.
“I have never been frightened of changes, or destroying the image. I feel the painting has a life of it’s own” – Raphael Mazzucco
Just as in his commercial work, Mazzucco’s art features beautiful human forms set against eye-catching and exotic landscapes. These backdrops span the world, from Vietnamese rice paddies to Icelandic glaciers and the Western Australian outback. Mazzucco then builds a layered narrative through paint, collage and more.
“My inspiration is multi-layered. It always seems to happen through discovering a new location I haven’t visited previously. Each new situation or new environment, when matched with a new persona, will automatically give a different – what I call – energy.” – Raphael Mazzucco.
Within Christian theology and medieval cosmology, the term Empyrean refers to the highest heaven or heavenly sphere, usually consisting of fire or light. The exhibition’s name reflects the artist’s passionate and spontaneous approach, as he leads his audience on a physical and emotional journey through his works.
Empyrean comprises of 60 incredible artworks, each of which captures the human form set against a backdrop of striking landscapes. Mazzucco applies multiple layers of paint, collage and hand-lettered texts to represent the many emotional narrative strands within each work, and within the conscious mind.
Mazzucco created this latest collection in an experimental state of mind, and his inventive approach extended to the interior architecture of our Los Angeles gallery, whose white walls were transformed with his distinctive artistic visual narrative.
“My intention is to achieve the ultimate emotion and beauty; to elicit pure joy to those who chose to dream. It’s just like the first time I saw my art so beautifully displayed in the window of Maddox Gallery in London. The presentation, the architecture, the flowers, all of it was awe inspiring; it was as if I’d died and gone to heaven, the highest heaven, Empyrean” – Raphael Mazzucco
