About the work

The Pilgrim

David Yarrow:

"Californian zoologist Dian Fossey's famous book ‘Gorillas in the Mist’ chronicled her research and conservation work that helped to reduce the downward population trend in mountain gorillas, ultimately saving them from extinction. She left a formidable legacy when she was tragically murdered in 1985. Her grave is uphill from the little mountain village of Bisate on the edge of the National Park, visited regularly by those that want to pay her homage. It was my first time during Covid 19 using this well-trodden path through the otherwise dense rainforest to access gorillas, following the advice of the rangers to track the Umubano Group. It transpired that a large Silverback, the 21 year old Bunyenyeri was coming down the mountain on the same Fossey trail at 10,000 feet. He stared down at me in an open space from a ridge further up, and thankfully I was able to record the moment. Maybe he had gone to pay his homage to Dian Fossey. Though we will never know, we decided to call this photograph The Pilgrim".
