The American Dream

David Yarrow:
“Paying authentic homage to the American “Wild West” and the legacy of Edward Curtis and Ansel Adams is challenging for any contemporary photographer. Its grandeur has been so well documented that artists risk a lot by focusing on this heavily mythologized era.

I am known to be my own biggest critic, believing that it’s primarily through failure that we learn how to succeed. This cinematic photograph however, allows for a moment of proud retrospection. The light and the compositional balance result in an image as emotional as it is timely and relevant. This print speaks to me, and of course the cowboy is as good as it gets.

America may have had the most challenging of years, but tomorrow marks a new chapter. At its core, it remains a nation of entrepreneurs. The cowboy capitalists venturing West in the 1800s provided much of the foundation of the American Dream, and were integral to the evolution of the American economy. Everything was possible and everything still remains possible. In this respect, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (Netflix) by the Coen Brothers, and its fourth chapter- starring Tom Waits as a determined gold prospector - says more about the American Dream than most Westerns”.
