About the work

Love is in the Air (Signed)

One of Banksy’s earliest and most iconic images, Love Is in the Air (Flower Thrower) was released as a limited edition screen print series of 50 signed and 450 unsigned works in 2003, in addition to 27 Artist Proofs. This image is largely monochromatic with the central figure stencilled in black and white against a bright red background, which has since been released in multiple colours.
Flower Thrower channels Banksy’s original roots in graffiti, rendered in his signature stencil style. The evocative image shows a young man with a bandana partially covering his face, throwing a bouquet of flowers at a protest, in the place of what could be something much more violent such as rocks or a Molotov cocktail. The figure was reportedly inspired by the global wave of student protests and riots in the 1960s against the Vietnam War and the artwork first appeared in an explicitly political context, as a large-scale mural in Bethlehem on the West Bank Wall in 2003.
Banksy’s clever use of iconography, substituting a weapon for flowers as a symbol of love and peace, suggests that the path to true change can be reached through less violent means. Flower Thrower was also featured on the cover of Banksy’s biography, Wall and Peace (2005) and more recently Guess unauthorised use the image for its flagship store in Regent Street in 2022.
