About the work

Gemma Fearon, Madina Redjai & Sarah Phelan

Did you always know that you wanted to go into the healthcare sector, and was there anything in particular that inspired you to select your career?

I love my profession. I love making a difference and making a difference is not always the big things. It could be something as little as giving time to sit and have a conversation with someone when they are feeling low or unwell. This has been a particular need of patients during the pandemic as we cannot allow visitors. A friendly face makes a difference and goes a long way. I get satisfaction from my job, going home at the end of a shift knowing I have made an impact on the lives of others.

What has your experience of the pandemic been like?

Like everyone it was scary knowing that this global pandemic was happening and yet, not knowing much about the virus itself. I felt scared for myself, my family and friends and my colleagues. I was redeployed to the Ventilation Unit to help care for patients who were very ill with coronavirus. I had only been qualified a year when I was moved into a role I had never done before in the middle of a pandemic.

To enable me to work on the front line I had to move out of my home to protect the vulnerable family members I lived with, and I moved into a hotel. I will never forget the physical, mental and emotional experiences I had working front line during this pandemic. All of the staff were amazing and worked as a team. We relied on each other; we provided the best possible care for all our patients. I am proud of myself, my colleagues and the trust I work for.

Over 23,000 NHS workers received one of Adee’s gift boxes. Did you personally receive one or know colleagues that did, and can you tell us about the experience?

I think what Adee is doing to support NHS staff is amazing. Some of my colleagues got a free gift box and they got to experience new products. It was rewarding to go home after a busy 12-hour shift with some free products to try. We all felt appreciated. It brightened up our day. People were speaking highly of Adee for making a difference to NHS staff members who were worn out physically and emotionally. It is such a kind and thoughtful thing to do for staff.
