The Birds

“This photograph recreates the famous scene in The Birds, when Hedren is first attacked by a seagull in a tiny boat. The now somewhat mocked special effects in the movie did a great job at inducing terror in 1963. Despite their limited postproduction toolkit, both Hitchcock’s Birds and Spielberg’s Jaws unequivocally stand the test of time.
I wanted to create a narrative as expansive and layered as possible. The lighthouse ‘Eddystone’ offered a special backdrop, 18 miles out to sea from our home and built over 70 years before people first settled in San Francisco in 1698. We knew it would be challenging to get our tiny boat out on the unfriendly English Channel, even before dropping our very own Tippi Hedren into it, but it all worked out at about 6.10 pm on a glorious mid-June evening. The benign weather made the feared English Channel a mill pond, the birds came, and Bella Di Lorenzo was a superstar in her rowing boat. As for the seagulls, I want to thank Ian Perks - the Godfather of the trawling fleet in the busiest fishing port in England, Brixham - for arranging the trawlers to gut their fish on location”.
