About the work

Fields of Gold

David Yarrow:

“A constant challenge in my work is how to capture the soul of a subject whilst conveying a sense of place. This complex alchemy is perhaps the biggest skill of all, and easier to address through the wounds of failure. I am not the first person to wrestle with this - it is integral to filmmaking and still photography. For masters of film, such as Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott and, of course, Martin Scorsese, their innate ability to achieve this balance was transcendental.

This is such a simple picture, and not difficult to capture once the subject matter was in place. I wanted the image to radiate a powerful, visceral sense of place and smell of the Serengeti, doing so without marginalising the star of the show - the majestic lion. The ratio is just right and there was enough wind to add an extra little layer to the narrative”.
