About the work

Diamonds in the Sky

David Yarrow:

“This photo was taken on a well-deserved, hugely exciting morning on the North Slope of Alaska after 72 hours of tough weather and weak content. We took our chances from about 5am as the storm passed, having done our homework and led by the very best local guide. It's moments and images like this one, that make all the compromises so worthwhile. We are very privileged to work so closely with such a magnificent animal as the adult polar bear.

The main challenge, as many may know, about working from a small boat in choppy seas, is that the camera moves along with the boat. This is especially difficult with a big lens. Throw in sub-zero temperatures and a wind chill, and we have a true test of one’s ability to work in tough conditions. I am glad no one will ever see some of the pictures I took in that sequence - they were of the sky!”
