"In the 1950s, the Californian Dream made Route 66 the most famous road in the world. “The Mother Road,” as Steinbeck called it in ‘The Grapes of Wrath’, became the path of flight for the American middle class, a trend accelerated by California’s booming economy and the opening of Disneyland in 1955. East of Amboy, the desert stretch still showcases Route 66 as it once was.
The scale is cinematic, but Amboy is a well-trodden location, long anchored by Roy’s Diner. The challenge was not in getting there, but in finding a way to transcend it. A Hong Kong friend, one of the world’s great collectors of vintage cars, offered his 1953 Ferrari 250 MM Vignale Spider, one of only 12 ever built. His team transported it 1,000 miles across America, understanding the chance to create something special. Its low windscreen allowed my lens into the faces of Daniela Braga and the wolf, letting them own the frame.
Route 66 is a metaphor for the American Dream. Go west, work hard, stay focused and enjoy the very best of lives. Daniela styled to the 1950s, exuding the positivity Nat King Cole captured in ‘Getting Your Kicks on Route 66’."
