Biography

"I seek to capture a vitality beyond the establishment of a mere likeness to the subject. Whilst I appreciate the importance of the individual being recognisable, the subjects are glimpsed rather than exposed, their inner selves hinted at but ultimately inscrutable."

Initially trained as an illustrator, Wright has spent the last 10 years devloping his own painterly language. One that seeks to look beyond the mere likeness to the subject.

Paul Wright is a celebrated artist known for his distinctive approach to portraiture. His work transcends traditional portraits, infusing even interior scenes and still life with a sense of life and personality. Wright’s technique is characterized by bold, visible brushstrokes that almost overshadow the subject matter, creating a highly physical presence on the canvas. Figures and objects emerge through a vibrant mesh of color, with faces often rendered in a style reminiscent of Cubism. His use of grayscale or flashes of brilliant color accentuates the age and features of his subjects, adding depth and emotion.

Born in Leicester, UK, in 1973, Wright’s talent has been recognized internationally. He was exhibited in the BP Portrait Award in 2006 and nominated again in 2014. Two books have been published on his work, highlighting his unique style and impact on contemporary art. Wright holds a BA in Illustration from Falmouth School of Art and has exhibited globally, including at the London Art Fair, Art Toronto, India Arts Festival in Mumbai, and Sara Eyestone Gallery in Santa Fe, Arizona. His works are included in prestigious collections such as Prudential, Standard Chartered Bank, Accenture, and Texas State University.

Wright’s artistic philosophy centers on capturing the essence of his subjects, who are often glimpsed rather than fully revealed, with their inner selves remaining elusive. Despite the often large and imposing scale of his work, Wright’s fluency of brushwork and rich palette make his art approachable and intimate. The indeterminate spaces his subjects inhabit create an atmosphere that invites viewers to explore the psychological ambiguity and depth of his portraits.
