Trolleys (Signed)
Trolleys was first released in 2007 as an edition of 500 unsigned and 150 signed black and white prints referencing the original canvas exhibited at his show "Barely Legal". A year later, 100 unsigned LA Editions were released with a slightly different weapon for one of the hunters. Finally, a Bethlehem version was exclusively available to purchase for the visitors of the ”Santa's Ghetto” exhibition. This very rare edition of 28 includes a special phrase in the packaging: "sort of like when the kids play with the box instead of the toy."
The scene depicted in Trolleys reimagines a prehistoric hunt with two men holding spears, but instead of an animal, their prey seen across from them on the grass is in fact two trolley carts. Demonstrating Banksy’s playfully subversive humour fused with sharp social critique, the image reflects contemporary society’s reliance on mass market commercialism. This theme is prevalent throughout Banksy’s works and within the Barely Legal series in particular, with the artist often commenting upon the powerful grip of corporations over consumers.
