HMV
HMV Dog is an early Banksy print released in a monochromatic edition of 150 signed screen prints and 600 unsigned prints in 2003. The image appropriates the well-known brand logo of the commercial music vendor HMV, which depicts a dog with a gramophone. Modifying the iconic image in his typical humorous style, Banksy’s HMV Dog sees the dog holding a bazooka pointed at the gramophone.
This artwork can be interpreted as depicting the cultural clash between old and young culture, the modern and the traditional, conservative and progressive politics. Another reading sees the gramophone as a symbol of the overly commercialised and capitalist nature of the contemporary music industry, which ought to be resisted by artists and the public alike. Anti-capitalist critique regularly occurs in Banksy’s print and canvases as he comments upon how large corporations are responsible for much of the problems in society. This sentiment is echoed in other famous works including Sale Ends or Very Little Helps.
