"The raw uniqueness of Iceland tests every artist’s ability to do it justice. The shorter the distance between the brain and the eye, the greater the chance of capturing the enormity of its visuals. With this image, we may have finally achieved our goal. I'm convinced Skogafoss offers the best opportunity for a creative narrative out of any waterfall in Iceland. From the accessible riverbed below, the visual is dramatic and clean. This is “Game of Thrones” country, and from the right angle, perhaps the finest backdrop in Europe.
The only time there is exclusive access to waterfalls like Skogafoss is in the early morning, when the waterfall is always in shadow. On this occasion, we were able to work longer as the high winds had prevented many tourists from visiting. It was still fairly dark and my depth of field was marginal, but with a sharp subject matter this rather helps the image. This is my first picture in which the subject occupies less than 1% and yet instantly grabs everyone’s eye. I have had this image in my mind for a few years, but could never get a beautiful horse in the right position at the right time until now".
