About the work

Ringo Starr

Andy Gotts:

When once asked if Ringo Starr was the best drummer in the world, John Lennon’s retort was "He is not even the best drummer in The Beatles!” I think the warmth and humour that has always been attributed to Ringo shines through in his personality. He was born the same year as my father (1940) and despite being in one of THE greatest bands of all time, he seems very grounded and humble. This shoot we did was exactly as I thought it would be. Like many famous people they all have their favourite face or pose. I knew Ringo ALWAYS did the ‘V’ peace sign in every photo and I was prepared for this. I started out by telling him I wanted moody shots along the line of Film Noir, so he pulled the collar of his jacket over his body and was really getting into the role. It was at that moment his wife, the actress Barbra Bach stepped into the shoot. Ringo then reverted into the ‘Ringo’ poses with his peace and love ‘V' poses. When I blasted at him to “put those bloody fingers away” he guffawed with laughter. And in return I managed to capture some lovely relaxed candid shots".
