Moving Through Colour
Opening on 21 November 2024 at Maddox Gallery Berkeley Street, Moving Through Colour invites us to view colour as an inner and symbolic language. Exploring our personal understanding and the broader connotations, this show brings together nine artists that use colour as the primary method of artistic exploration.
Dairo Vargas, Brent Estabrook and Iván Montaña reveal unique facets of pink’s emotional resonance, radiating warmth and passion. Vargas uses these shades to envelop viewers in vibrant energy, while Estabrook’s playful subject matters reflect innocence and joy. Montaña transcends from soft pastels to deep tones, capturing complexity and evoking both depth and delight.
The Connor Brothers and Sam Smyth approach orange with uplifting energy and a touch of whimsy. The Connor Brothers set off with boldness in mind, challenging the status quo, splashing the colour across a famous reminiscence. Smyth adds a lively warmth to his abstracts, whilst Deborah Segun’s dynamic brushwork captures a welcoming and invigorating essence.
Oscar Llorens creates a playful, dreamlike space with the spirit of life and growth signified in green. In contrast, the warm gradients of Segun’s work bring a comforting familiarity. Both artists evoke dual qualities of grounding and imagination; they root us in reality, while simultaneously suggesting boundless vitality.
Ivan Montaña's expansive use of blue elicits a sense of limitless space, encouraging the imagination to wander beyond its confines, whereas Smyth’s textured abstractions fill the canvas with an unexpected vibrancy, challenging its usual tranquillity. Estabrook blends nostalgia with modernity, using the tones to convey a sense of curiosity. Meanwhile, in the mist of indigo, the Miaz Brothers challenge our sight, evoking a mysterious and almost dreamlike experience.
In Moving Through Colour, the artists are joined by this common thread, creating a dialogue, where each piece influences the perception of the others. Viewers are invited to consider how colour shapes interpretation and in the overlap between personal experiences and general perceptions, meaning emerges, painting an emotional landscape in this must-see exhibition.
