The picture-perfect relationship between contemporary art and charities

The relationship between art and philanthropy has a rich history. Indeed, art auctions can often represent the most valuable fundraising events for many non profit charities, particularly when emerging and established artists champion their cause.

Some art auctions are born in reaction to tragic events. For instance, Sotheby’s in London raised £1.9m for local charities following the Grenfell Tower fire of 2017. Others are fuelled by an act of generosity from an individual or family. As an example, the late George Michael and Robin Williams both owned extensive contemporary art collections, now set to be auctioned off for charity.

And last year, the collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller set a new record as the most significant charity auction in history, with 1,500 works raising $832.6 million at Christie’s.

In all cases, artists can bring joy and opportunity to many vulnerable or underrepresented individuals by helping to raise funds for commendable charity projects. Conversely, art auctions allow collectors to browse unique art portfolios and contribute to worthy causes while acquiring works they love.

Maddox Gallery

Since our inception in 2015, we have raised a significant sum for a variety of charities, often closely in collaboration with our talented roster of contemporary artists. In May 2018, we worked with British art duo The Connor Brothers to raise awareness and funds for The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) at their exhibition launch event at Maddox Gallery Westbourne Grove.

In October 2018, supermodel Cara Delevingne – the face of the new TAG Heuer campaign – was in London for an auction of the original visual of the “Don’t Crack Under Pressure” campaign, shot by photographer David Yarrow. We hosted an auction at David’s solo exhibition ‘It’s 5 O’clock Somewhere’ and raised £250,000 with proceeds donated to the Cara Delevingne Foundation.

This year, Maddox Gallery is delighted to be partnering with Coutts Bank in support of Willow Foundation’s 20th anniversary in September 2019.

Willow Foundation

Willow is the only national charity working to provide uplifting and unforgettable experiences to seriously ill young adults between the ages of 16 to 40.

Every year, the charity organises more than 1,000 Special Days for individuals living with life-threatening conditions suartch as cancer, motor neurone disease, cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy. These experiences are often a final chance for individuals facing a difficult and uncertain future to create precious memories with loved ones.

To mark the occasion of their 20th anniversary, Willow will be launching The Extraordinary Collection, featuring one-off works donated by various artists. This very special event will showcase a truly inspiring collection of art with a theme of ‘Supporting the Extraordinary.’

You can play a part

If you are interested in supporting this incredible cause, please do get in touch with the Willow Foundation. We also invite you to attend The Extraordinary Collection later this year, where we are sure you will be stunned by a presentation of modern and contemporary art and will have the opportunity to bid on a selection of artworks, proceeds of which will be donated to Willow Foundation’s cause.
