Mina Alikhani: Artist in Residence

8 September – 20 November 2026

About the EXHIBITION

For nearly 12 weeks, Iranian-American artist Mina Alikhani joins Maddox Gallery as Artist in Residence, offering audiences a closer look at her practice as a new body of work develops.

Rooted in Surrealism, Alikhani’s practice examines the pressures, expectations and structures that shape how we live. Earlier paintings engaged more directly with political and humanitarian narratives; more recently, her visual language has moved towards imagined landscapes, stylised natural forms and architectural spaces, where colour, repetition and scale create environments that feel at once familiar and unsettled.

Six existing paintings mark the starting point for the residency. From there, familiar references may remain, shift or fall away as new paintings begin to establish their own direction.

What continues, changes or disappears remains open. Rather than encountering a finished body of work at a single moment, audiences and collectors can see the choices, experiments and shifts that usually remain behind the studio door.

As paintings are completed, they will be added to a catalogue throughout the residency. Some may be shared privately with collectors and advisors before wider release.

First and foremost, this is a working studio: a period in which Alikhani can spend sustained time with her practice and allow the work to develop without a predetermined outcome. By the end, the paintings will carry the evidence of what changed along the way.

Portrait of Mina Alikhani

ARTIST

Mina Alikhani (b. 1984) challenges cultural constructs and societal expectations through an unflinching, truth-driven lens in her work. Rooted in Surrealism, her practice is centred in oil painting and monumental mural work, with occasional sculptural explorations that extend her visual narratives into dimensional form.

Alikhani views artistic practice as both witness and resistance – a responsibility to reflect the psychological, political, and emotional realities of the era one inhabits. Her work calls attention to buried sociopolitical narratives, humanitarian injustices, and the broader spectrum of the human condition.

As her work continues to evolve, Alikhani remains anchored in an ethos defined by authenticity, confrontation, and cultural defiance.
