Maddox Gallery is delighted to announce ‘In Every Moment’, the new solo exhibition of paintings by British artist Will Martyr, opening on 11th October 2024, 12 Berkeley St, London.
In this exhibition, Will Martyr’s paintings joyfully explore many of our most treasured experiences of travel, relaxation and time spent with the ones we love. Martyr’s paintings of perfect skies, sunsets, and beaches dotted with sun loungers are instantly recognisable. These impossibly perfect places create a universe that allows us all to reflect on times in our lives when we feel most at peace. They are depictions of everywhere and nowhere, allowing the viewer to transport their own memories within the painting.

Following Martyr’s successful exhibitions in Gstaad and London, the In Every Moment series emphasises the essential elements of life—light and water—infusing the paintings with a sense of joy, vitality, and a dreamscape quality. The reflective surfaces of pools and the warm glow of summer skies allow Martyr to experiment with complex colour contrasts, adding depth and dynamism to each composition. His meticulous layering of paint enhances the visual impact and deepens the emotional resonance of the works, drawing viewers in and inviting them to fully immerse themselves in these calm yet vibrant scenes. Martyr’s hybrid locations, which blend the real and imagined are beautiful yet elusive, capturing fleeting moments in time.

The inflatables, chairs and ice creams, often represented in his works, are a stage being set for the players. Without figures in the paintings these playful elements are the players in the scene, representing us and loved ones. Martyr’s expertly composed settings invite us into this scene to participate and relax.

Martyr’s use of tondos highlights the geometric precision and emotional intensity of his settings. These smaller circular works are as complex as the larger canvases, drawing the viewer into exploring Martyr’s process of painting, adding to a more intimate engagement both the subject and physicality of these works.
