Biography

"My life experience is recovered by the replacement of photography; I can objectify these pains and make them less personal."

Cheng Zhe is a Chinese contemporary artist born in Heilongjiang Province, China and currently based in Qingdao, Shandong. The artist completed his studies in oil painting at the renowned Xu Beihong's Studio of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2004.

Her recent works are deeply inspired by his young daughter, whose joyful and kind nature helped him navigate the hardships of the pandemic. His newly adopted motif of a little girl serves as a symbol of great love, kindness, and mercy—qualities he wishes to share with the world through his art.

Zhe began his artistic journey in 2004 in the studio of the late Chinese painter Xu Beihong at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, where he mastered oil painting. His notable works, such as Red RiseMemory of 19XX, and Born after the 80s, are highly sought after and have been collected by both domestic art institutions and international private collectors.

Zhe’s surroundings and experiences have significantly influenced his work, which is imbued with emotions ranging from joy to sadness and playfulness. In 2023, he explored various mediums and techniques, continually pushing his artistic boundaries. His recent body of work reflects the instability of current global issues and their potential impact on future generations, including his beloved daughter. The "little girl" character that appears in his work embodies innocence, love, and a response to these global challenges. Through rich yet simple colors and tender brushstrokes, Zhe captures her expressions of joy, sorrow, and playfulness, inviting viewers to reflect on the world around them and appreciate the simple gifts of life.

Cheng Zhe has exhibited his work in both solo and group exhibitions internationally. His recent solo shows include "Simple Gifts" (2022) and "One Flower One World" (2023) at Yidi Art Gallery in Hong Kong, and "Unforgettable Moments" (2022) at Yotomy Art Gallery in Duisburg, Germany. He has also participated in group exhibitions at Maddox Gallery in London (2022), Gallery Afternoon in Seoul (2022), and Seefood Room Gallery in Hong Kong (2023). Zhe’s evolving oeuvre continues to captivate audiences, blending personal narrative with broader social commentary.
