Biography

Cheng Zhe is a Chinese contemporary artist born in Heilongjiang Province, China and currently based in Qingdao, Shandong. The artist completed his studies in oil painting at the renowned Xu Beihong's Studio of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2004.

Based in Qingdao, Shandong, China, Cheng Zhe’s recent works are inspired by his joyful and kind young daughter, who motivated him to overcome the hardships of the pandemic. His newly adopted motif of a little girl is an emblem of great love, kindness and mercy, which the artist wishes to share with the world.

Zhe’s artistic studies began in 2004, in the studio of the late Chinese painter Xu Beihong. Located in the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, it is here that he mastered the art of oil painting. Many of his notable works, including Red RiseMemory of 19XX and Born after the 80s, are highly sought after, and he is widely collected by domestic art institutions and international private collectors alike.

Greatly influenced by his surroundings, Zhe’s art is filled with joy, sadness and playfulness. Using rich, gentle colours he perfectly embodies his subjects’ innocence and love.

Cheng Zhe's surroundings have had a significant influence on his work. Over the year 2023, the artist explored various mediums and techniques in painting, constantly subverting his own artistic boundaries. The artist’s oeuvre is constantly evolving both stylistically and contextually. His recent body of work is drastically inspired by the instability of current global issues, and how they can tremendously affect future generations, including his beloved daughter. He has also found inspiration in his young daughter, who has brought him joy and kindness, helping him overcome the challenges brought about by the Global Pandemic, and thereby creating the “little girl” character. This character featured in his work serves as a symbol of great love, kindness, and mercy that he wishes to share with the world. She is depicted in various expressions, including joy, sorrow, and playfulness, using rich yet simple colours and tender brushstrokes that embody her innocence and love. The artist shrewdly utilizes the “little girl” character — an amiable and approachable visual presentation — to address these current global issues directly and intimately. His oeuvre thus invites the viewer to ruminate on the issues surrounding us and to be grateful for what we have in life. Meanwhile, his visual expression showcases the meticulous unconditional father’s love for his daughter.

Cheng Zhe’s recent solo exhibitions include "Simple Gifts," and “One Flower One World,” at Yidi Art Gallery, Hong Kong, in 2022 and 2023 respectively; and “Unforgettable Moments,” at Yotomy Art Gallery in Duisburg, Germany in 2022. The artist has also participated in various group exhibitions at Maddox Gallery in 2022 in London, UK; Gallery Afternoon in Seoul, Korea in 2022; and Seefood Room Gallery in Hong Kong in 2023.
