About Roy Lichtenstein

A canonical figure in the history of American Pop Art, Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) blurred the boundaries between high and low art, challenging the art establishment while reflecting on the interconnected nature of contemporary culture and consumerism. Best known for his signature Ben Day dot pattern, nearly all his subjects were taken from comic strips and commercial print media. Painted in his prolific Pop period in the early 1960s, his iconic works include Crying Girl (1963) and Whaam! (1963).

Born in New York City in 1923, Lichtenstein graduated from the Franklin School for Boys in 1940. He received his artistic education from the Ohio State University, where his early influences included Rembrandt, Daumier and Picasso. Between 1943 and 1946, he served in the American military, which heavily influenced his iconography. He created his first Pop Art pieces in the early 1960s, rising to fame alongside other prominent members of the movement, like Andy Warhol.

For Lichtenstein’s first solo exhibition in New York in 1961, he debuted the Ben Day dot pattern that quickly became synonymous with his style of painting. Incorporating cartoon characters and comic book motifs, such as speech bubbles with fragments of text, his works often featured the character of a young blonde woman, obviously in distress, reflecting the stereotypical representation of women in mainstream media and television.
