About the work
The Governor
David Yarrow:
"This portrait taken at around 11,000 feet in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda was as hard earned as any portrait I have taken.
For portraiture, I prefer cloud cover and some degree of room to work with, along with some light to help my depth of focus. The silverback also has to be alert and compliant, which is more common earlier in the day.
The gorilla in this image is the son of Kwitonda, a famous silverback who passed away recently. His son is now Governor on this side of the volcano, and this intent is clear on his face. The light was kind and the level of facial detail transcends most of my previous work with gorillas. It was a good way to end 2019".
