About Richard Hambleton

Richard Hambleton (1952-2017) was an influential surviving member of the group of creatives who emerged from New York’s buzzing street art scene during the boom years of the 1980s, earning him the nickname the “Godfather of Street Art”. Part of a circle that included Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, his artistic legacy is undeniable today, yet he had a famously fluctuating career, with his oeuvre gaining considerable recognition only after his death.

Best known for a recurring visual motif known as the Shadowman, an ominous, black silhouette of a man that piggybacked on the city’s high crime rate, the artist gradually withdrew from the public eye in the 1990s, shaken by the death of his peers, Haring and Basquiat, and struggling with drug addiction himself.
