A brief history of the Italian artist
As one of the contemporary art scene’s latest rising stars, Simafra’s work is very new to the art world, but he follows in great footsteps. Born in Florence, the artist still lives and works in the city where Michaelangelo’s studios once were.
Simafra only began painting professionally in 2000, learning decoration and classic art restoration crafts in a well-known Florentine workshop. In 2004, he began participating in art competitions and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad.
The talented artist then began to exhibit nationally and internationally. He worked in Paris in 2008, and won the exhibition prize at ‘Premio Italia’ that year. Simafra has also enjoyed major exhibitions in Bonn, Berlin and London, and has been showcased in numerous major European art fairs.
In early 2017, Maddox Gallery was delighted to play host to Simafra’s first ever solo exhibition in Mayfair, London. ‘Eden’ was an incredible success, and we’ve enjoyed continuing to show the artists’ works across our galleries.
Our Managing Director and Curator at Maddox Gallery, James Nicholls, had been introduced to Simafra’s work by a friend who featured the artist in their own private collection. Immediately struck by the breath-taking works, James confirmed that this extraordinary talent must be showcased in the UK.
Invest in Simafra and join a celebrity following
Now, leading contemporary art experts and celebrities alike have chosen to buy Simafra art. His pieces feature in prestigious collections owned by the Lebanese Minister of Finance, the Prince of Qatar and Hollywood actress Cameron Diaz.
Interior decorators also love his works, and prestigious luxury hotels such as the Cipriani group have acquired his unique works to enhance sensuous and elegant surroundings. His work has also featured in leading interior design magazines including Elle Décor (USA).
Taking inspiration from Klimt
Simafra art is instantly recognisable by its rich colour palette, incredible layered textures and the sumptuous use of gold leaf to accent pieces.
While he has cited a huge number of influences, spanning many historical periods and artistic genres, Simafra’s use of use of colour – particularly gold – has drawn numerous comparisons to Klimt’s work. Luckily for keen collectors, Simafra has not yet reached the heights of Klimt’s record-breaking Sotheby’s auctions, and is far more accessible as a result.
By choosing to invest in emerging art by Simafra now, collectors have the chance of experiencing a great uplift in value in the future.
Simafra work is informed by nature
Nature and the environment represent incredible sources of inspiration for Simafra.
“I paint Nature, the source that enriches my soul,” Simafra explains. “This theme is ancient and yet enduring, just like my painting, that aims to be timeless.”.
As a collection, ‘Eden’ also has clear associations with Christianity’s creation myth. Albero della conoscenza del bene e del male (Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil), Adamo ed Eva (Adam and Eve) and La tentazione (The Temptation) all make clear reference to the biblical narrative.
However, Simafra claims he was inspired by his own Eden, with his own “garden of earthly delights.” Paintings such as ‘The Family’, ‘Adam and Eve’ and ‘The Strength of the Forest’ were inspired by everyday parts of his life, while ‘The Enchanted Forest’, ‘Glimpse of the Forest’ and ‘Tree of Dreams’ are a representation of metaphorical places.
