Javier Calleja

About Javier Calleja

The Spanish artist Javier Calleja is renowned for his stylised, saccharine characters with oversized heads, exaggerated eyes and irreverent slogans emblazoned on their t-shirts. Inspired by contemporary Superflat codes and the visual simplicity of Manga, his works teeter between childlike innocence and cynicism, playing into the nostalgic Kawaii aesthetic pioneered by his contemporaries Yoshitomo Nara and Takashi Murakami.

Drawing influences from the Pop Art and Surrealist movements, Calleja originally envisaged his “children” to be visual representations of his own feelings and experiences. Soon, they had become his unmistakable signature, amassing an enormous following, particularly in the Asian market.

Born in Málaga in 1971, Calleja was more interested in gymnastics than art in his youth and trained with the hope of going to the Olympics. He began taking his art seriously in his 20s, when he enrolled in the fine arts programme at Granada University, receiving a bachelor’s degree in 2000.

Often compared to the Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara, Calleja in fact apprenticed under Nara in 2007. The creation of his first, wide-eyed characters was a reaction to the intellectual artists he was introduced to in the 1990s as a student. A rebellion against the over-theorisation of art, rather than having to explain his works, Calleja prefers for the viewer to look into his characters’ eyes and find their own meanings.
