About Juan Cuéllar

Juan Cuéllar Costa, born in Valencia, Spain, is a prominent contemporary painter whose work engages deeply with popular imagery, mass media, and significant cultural shifts. He studied painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, beginning a notable exhibition career in 1995. Throughout his career, Cuéllar has received esteemed fellowships, including the Alfons Roig scholarship, a residency at the Spanish Academy in Rome, and the prestigious Fortuny scholarship in Venice.

Cuéllar's artistic practice frequently explores the cultural and economic complexities of modern life, particularly spotlighting the 1950s as a pivotal period in societal transformation. His recent series, “Gasoline is White,” exemplifies his critical examination of economic power structures and climate crisis narratives, blending everyday symbols like gas stations and artificial intelligence storefronts into enigmatic, thought-provoking compositions.

He has presented over thirty-seven solo exhibitions internationally, with notable showcases at My Name’s Lolita Art Gallery in Madrid, Bugno Gallery in Venice, Gala Gallery in Chicago, and Walden Contemporary. Cuéllar's works have featured in prominent art fairs globally, such as ARCO Madrid, Scope Basel and New York, ArtChicago, UVNT Madrid, and Urban Art Fair Paris.
