Why Art Fairs Matter: Seven Years of Maddox at Art Miami

Art Miami has long been Maddox’s stage on the world scene - a place to engage with collectors, unveil major works and test the pulse of the market. As we return for another edition, we reflect on how this fair has shaped our international strategy and strengthened our presence in the United States.

The Role of the Art Fair

Where taste is tested, markets shift and relationships deepen in real time, art fairs are where the art world moves fastest. These gatherings act as catalysts for Maddox, providing direct access to collectors, a stage to debut new work, and immediate insight into demand and pricing. What might take months to learn in a gallery unfolds over days on the fair floor.

Yet their value extends far beyond transactions. Art fairs deliver concentrated client meetings, exposure to new audiences and global press attention, reinforcing Maddox’s position on the international stage. They are meeting grounds for seasoned collectors and first-time buyers alike, allowing us to showcase both investment-grade blue-chip works and emerging voices shaping the next wave of Contemporary art.

Within the fair environment, everything happens in real time: collectors encounter works in person, conversations move swiftly from curiosity to acquisition, and responses to new series can be gauged as they unfold. This intensity is not only commercial; it reveals how audiences respond to the ideas and aesthetics that define Maddox’s identity.

Our booth operates as both showcase and strategy, pairing the confidence of established names with the energy of emerging talent. This balance strengthens relationships, expands visibility and keeps Maddox at the centre of the Contemporary conversation.

Art Miami, in particular, holds a distinctive place in that vision. As one of the most established fairs in the United States - and a key component of Miami Art Week - it attracts a cosmopolitan audience that unites seasoned collectors with new patrons. Its year-end timing makes it the perfect moment to take the market’s temperature, while its vibrancy mirrors Maddox’s own growth across the US.

The Maddox Art Miami Timeline

Since 2017, Art Miami has been a constant in Maddox’s calendar - each year marking a step forwards in our international evolution.

2017 - 2019

Maddox Gallery Booth At Art Miami 2018

Our US debut in 2017 introduced Maddox to an international audience with a roster that included The Connor Brothers, David Yarrow, Bradley Theodore, Michael Moebius, RETNA, Banksy, Harland Miller, and Jeff Koons. Highlights included CBS filming Yarrow’s work on-site and a charity auction with Haute Living that raised $27,000 for wildlife conservation.

In 2018, we returned with a major spotlight on Richard Hambleton alongside Yarrow, RETNA, The Connor Brothers, Niclas Castello, Bradley Theodore and Harland Miller, coinciding with the opening of Maddox Los Angeles.

By 2019, as Art Miami celebrated its 30th anniversary with more than 170 galleries, Maddox presented a refreshes line up featuring Harland Miller, Kai, David Yarrow, Lefty Out There, Coco Dávez, Joseph Klibansky and Invader - firmly establishing ourselves as a key returning exhibitor.

2020 - 2023

Maddox Gallery Booth At Art Miami 2021

The disruption of 2020 prompted new ways to connect, with Maddox embracing virtual programming and digital outreach during Miami Art Week.

In 2021, our booth featured an exceptional group of Banksy canvases, a new Connor Brothers series and a freshly captured David Yarrow photograph. The fair opened with the US$4 million sale of Banksy’s ‘Charlie Brown’ at the VIP preview, drawing significant international attention.

Our 2022 presentation expanded further, including Banksy, Warhol, Harland Miller, KAWS, George Condo, The Connor Brothers, Will Martyr, and David Yarrow, reaffirming Maddox’s dual strength in blue-chip and contemporary names.

By 2023, the focus shifted toward Maddox’s own roster—featuring Cooper, Brent Estabrook, Jessica Brilli, Will Martyr, Dairo Vargas, Nick Grindrod, Sooyoung Chung, Jo Gyuhun, Bibi Lei, and Niall Campbell Strachan - balanced by iconic blue-chip favourites. The booth came alive through Brent Estabrook's live painting, which drew audiences and fellow artists, including Will Smith, to watch the work unfold.

Inside the Booth: The Maddox Formula

Maddox Gallery Booth At Art Miami 2022

Over seven years at Art Miami, we have refined a formula that delivers impact - visually, commercially and culturally. Each presentation is anchored by a curatorial balance: the authority of blue-chip names that instil confidence and the fresh narratives of our contemporary artists that bring immediacy and depth. This duality has become our signature.

Every element of the booth is deliberate. Scale, colour and composition work in harmony to create a space that feels expansive and unmistakably Maddox. Seating areas invite conversation, encouraging visitors to linger and engage. Lighting and layout are carefully orchestrated to enhance connection and accessibility.

Behind the scenes, precision meets preparation. Weeks of pre-fair outreach ensures key clients and advisors are primed to visit. On-site appointments and rapid post-fair follow-ups convert introductions into enduring relationships.

The benefits ripple across every part of what we do:

  • For the brand, it reinforces Maddox’s international presence and media visibility.

  • For the market, it delivers clear signals on sales and pricing.

  • For artists, it amplifies exposure and accelerates recognition.

  • For clients, it offers efficient access to the full spectrum of Maddox’s art and artists in a single visit.

Looking Ahead to Art Miami 2025

This year’s Art Miami presentation celebrates scale, colour and storytelling. Blending homegrown US voices with established UK names to reflect Maddox’s balance of experience and innovation.

David Yarrow’s Black Magic (Colour) (2025)

Leading the presentation is David Yarrow’s ‘Black Magic’, a panoramic photograph capturing a black panther staring directly into the lens. Shot in Transvaal, South Africa, its striking monochrome palette and near three-metre span lend cinematic intensity - a hallmark of Yarrow’s practice. This limited-edition piece embodies the tension and atmosphere that define his most powerful work.

RETNA returns to Miami with new calligraphic compositions built from layered symbols and rhythmic abstraction. Drawing on influences that span ancient script to contemporary graffiti, his work bridges street culture and fine art, infusing the booth with unmistakable energy and edge.

The Connor Brothers’ Ride or Die (2025)

The Connor Brothers unveil new works from their ‘Western’ series, reimagining classic American Western through text, irony and wit. Among them, ‘No One Is Born Brave’ pairs pulp imagery with wry reflections on courage and masculinity - a vivid continuation of their dialogue between myth and meaning.

Will Martyr’s We Are Never Far Away (2025)

British artist Will Martyr offers a vivid counterpoint with four original oil paintings, including ‘Let’s Go Swimming’ - a 150cm tondo evoking the allure of an imagined paradise through mirrored elements, saturated tones and precise geometry. Inspired loosely by the Beverly Hills Hotel, the work encapsulates Martyr’s vision of modern leisure and architectural serenity.

Returning after strong engagement in 2023, Dairo Vargas and Nick Grindrod bring new works that continue to captivate with emotion and structure. Completing the line-up, Cooper presents two new acrylic-on-linen paintings - vibrant, playful explorations of everyday life rendered in bold stripes, lush foliage and exuberant colour. Transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary, this marks Cooper’s second appearance with Maddox at Art Miami, confirming the artist’s growing international acclaim.

Conclusion

Art Miami remains a cornerstone of Maddox’s US activity - a place where new relationships are forged, our artists reach new audiences and the tone for the year ahead is set. As we return for another edition, we look forward to welcoming collectors, clients and friends to preview the works and meet the team in Miami.
